Gender Equality is Important in Development

This was conveyed by Assistant I Regional Secretariat of Koltim Arisman SP representing the Regent of Coltim, when opening the Gender Mainstreaming Implementation Policy Socialization (PUG), including Gender Responsive Budgeting Planning (PPRG) of the Coltim District, in the Hall of the Coltim Regent’s Office, Thursday (7/10).

«We realize that problems that are closely related to women’s development programs so far are caused by the absence of a development approach that specifically considers the benefits equally for women and men,» he said.

Given how important gender equality is in development, he continued, greater concrete concern is demanded by placing it as one of the program areas, with the aim of accelerating the creation of gender equality, in all aspects of the lives of the people of East Kalimantan, not limited to the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation processes. development policies, programs and projects.

This continued Arisman, based on the fact that women’s participation in development is still low. Besides the existence of various forms of discriminatory practices against women, there are also gaps in women’s political participation stemming from the imbalance in the socio-cultural structure of society. Other facts, he said, also show that the majority of women still have limited access to quality and adequate health services, cheap and quality education, and involvement in wider public activities. In addition, there are still low quality of life and the role of women, and high rates of violence against women and children

He added, human trafficking among women and children, low welfare and child protection, many laws and regulations that can be gendered, as well as discriminatory against women, and do not care about child protection.

«Hopefully what we are doing today can contribute thoughts and benefits for all of us, especially in increasing the role of gender equality in development in East Kolaka Regency. With this outreach, I hope that in the future women’s empowerment will be even more focused, and still refer to the practical and strategic needs of women,» she concluded.

Exploring the Value of the Universal Significance of the Kartini Archives and the Struggle for Gender Equality as MOW

In commemoration of Kartini Day which fell on April 21, the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) held an archival webinar «Exploring the Universal Significance of the Kartini Archives and the Struggle for Gender Equality as a Memory of the World (MOW)» which was attended by the archival community. The event was held online through the zoom cloud meeting application and YouTube live broadcast as well as offline at the Noerhadi Magetsari Multipurpose Room, Building C floor 2, ANRI.

The Head of ANRI, Imam Gunarto in his remarks said that internationally, the legacy of documents on gender is only about 5% of the entire MoW collection that has been registered by UNESCO, so that the gender archive is also a UNESCO priority program. He added that Kartini’s archive and the gender struggle in Indonesia had not only had a national impact, but also had an international impact where great Indonesian female figures have inspired the world. “Therefore, as one of UNESCO’s global priorities, gender equality needs to be integrated in all programs, processes and organizational policies through two approaches: gender mainstreaming and gender specific initiatives. The lack of a gender equality perspective means that many women’s contributions to world history are not properly recognized,” she explained.

The webinar also attended as resource persons, Daily Head of the Indonesian National Committee for Unesco (KNIU), Itje Chodidjah, Archive Ambassador, Rieke Diah Pitaloka, Main Secretary of ANRI, Rini Agustiani, and Military and Defense Expert, Connie R. Bakrie. The role as moderator is ANRI Young Archivist, Octavia Syafarwati.

On this occasion, Itje Chodidjah discussed one of UNESCO’s global priority programs, namely MOW which documents certain archives that contain high significance values. He said that the Kartini archive or gender equality archive deserved to be MoW because of the documentation of the struggle in it. To get more complete information, you can directly click here.
